Bianca Durrant is a Melbourne based interdisciplinary artist, who works with installation, video, drawing and text. The current focus on process based spatial installations, is informed by images and textual data including museum collection statistics, museum architectural plans and natural history documentation and site visits. The ongoing series of papier-mache taxidermied animals comments on the aestheticization of nature and the western culture of collecting in both museum and art contexts. These new works use her trademark lo-fi materials, in this instance paper and glue.

There is an old Zen proverb “Before enlightenment; chop wood carry water, after enlightenment; chop wood carry water”. These work explore the notion of the sacred in the everyday using the technique of freehand machine embroidery to ‘sketch’ people at mundane tasks on backgrounds of collaged text from teachings and stories of many different cultures. Framed in gold, these images pose questions of where and what is important, is it the being or the doing that defines who we are? Is it our religion or our desire for dinner that more often compels us to act?

I like to imagine that one day all the things that surround us on a daily basis might re-group and take over. The process of collecting objects, or for this particular work, the process of visually collecting images of flowers, is crucial to my practice. I like how found objects often have an inherent potential of being something completely different from what they actually are. Photography is one way of exploring these potential qualities and estranging the familiar from it's primary function and meaning.

In a time where the world around us seems to be moving faster and faster with people barely having time to stop and smile to one another, photography for me has become the way to capture the fleeting, remembering what many would forget, and a means to notice what may normally go unnoticed. It is my way of bringing out the subtle beauty in the everyday, rendering people, objects and places with an aesthetic quality that exists in all things yet somehow seems to be missed by many.
Working mostly in black and white or desaturated colour, my photographs focus principally on the everyday world – trees, clouds and the candid behaviour of people in their natural environments. By capturing things in an informal, documentary style using whatever natural light is available, I hope to highlight the uniqueness and beauty present in all things on this earth, if we only take the time to stop and look at the world around us

The physical act of engaging with paint for me is an inner investigation and a process of discovery. I believe that the gestural mark is a direct physical expression. There is always an intense experience, emotion and feelings that relate to a memory time and place that I aim to translate in paint.’ Jackson Pollock stated, “Painting for me is energy made visible” I aim to capture the experience of my travels through South East Asia, Europe and Australia. To capture the true essences of the places I have explored through colour and form. I do not wish to copy nature, merely to use it as a starting point. The diverse environments in which I have lived and travelled have provided an immense inspiration to my work. Capturing memories and recreating their essence, inspired by the mood and atmosphere of a place and time. I aim to celebrate the power of nature and the effects of the elements, wind, fire and water; the combined forces that create the ‘marks on the landscape’.
