      <title>High Street Festivals : Charity Bells</title>

		<link>http://www.highstreetnorthcote.com.au/festivals/charity_bells/</link>

<description>Christmas is a time for giving
Charity Bells is a community arts project of the Northcote Business Association where local schools decorate fiberglass bells to compete for a prize for their school.

The decorated bells are then placed in High St Northcote shops to show off the children’s handiwork and at the same time acting as a symbol to encourage people to make donations to local charities.

The Northcote Business Association loves Christmas and the Christmas Bells is a great way for traders and their patrons to get into the spirit of the season and give what they can to those in need. Christmas is a time for giving

      <title>High Street News : Planning a more beautiful Northcote</title>

		<link>http://www.highstreetnorthcote.com.au/news/planning_a_more_beautiful_northcote/</link>

<description>Focusing on the Northcote Activity Centre, Darebin Council’s Northcote Streetscape Masterplan will give the community a more attractive streetscape...Focusing on the Northcote Activity Centre, Darebin Council’s Northcote Streetscape Masterplan will give the community a more attractive streetscape, safer and improved walking environments with more seating and shade, and more public space to enjoy.

In a press release issued by Darebin City Council, Darebin Mayor, Cr Diana Asmar said, “This Masterplan sets out an overall streetscape design to improve the look, feel and safety of Northcote.”

When you consider that a recent survey of 700 High St shoppers found that two thirds of people walked, rode bicycles or caught public transport to the shopping district it is little wonder that improved pedestrian comfort has been made a top priority.

The Northcote community eagerly awaits the enhanced public spaces, greener entry to Northcote and celebration of Northcote’s identity that the masterplan will bring.

This year, over 20 High Street Northcote Traders joined the pilot sustainable business management program, VIC 1000, in a bid to reduce their level of environmental impact.

With the help of the VIC 1000 team, these traders were guided through a process of audits, workshops and training over a 12 month period with the goal of reducing water consumption, volume of waste going to landfill and greenhouse gases produced.

One of the participating venues, The Northcote Uniting Church, was so successful in their efforts they were awarded the overall excellence award for outstanding results across the four pillars of sustainability.

But apart from the environmental benefits, the program had other advantages as well. According to the VIC 1000 website, businesses participating in the program Australia&#45;wide have found a minimum average annual saving of $500 in direct operating costs.

Village Green CEO, Doug Smith, states, “While each business may make only small changes, together the changes are significant.”

To see which businesses were involved in VIC 1000 look out for the VIC 1000 stickers in shop windows or for more information on the program visit: http://www.villagegreen.com.au
